Drive shaft rear transmission seal is leaking?
(2012-01-10 15:20:19) 1. Says: what happen if I dont fix it right away>? can the fluid be loose while driving? it leaking slowly would it get worst?99 ford explorer 4.0 145kmiles2. Says: If you don't fix it right away it will just continue to leak as long as you keep adding fluid or it runs dry. Yes it will get worse. It's about 45 min job so about $100.3. Says: Change the seal, not very difficult, just mark the driveshaft so you put it back in with it indexed correctly. remove the bolts holding the driveshaft in place located at the rear differentual. have a drain pan close by to catch the fluid..pry the driveshaft forward slightly and then slide it out, remove the seal located at the rear of the transmission and install the new one by tapping lightly and evenly back into the transmission. reinstall the driveshaft indexed correctly and then check the fluid4. Says: There are some additives (from car parts stores) that might slow the leak. You could continue to add fluid (but that is expensive and will make a mess in your driveway).
You can probably change just the rear seal (without rebuilding the entire transmission). However, for an engine of that age and mileage, it is likely that the transmission will have to be completely overhauled soon.
RECOMMENDATION:
Change the rear seal.5. Says: Its best to fix it as soon as possible. If not fixed soon you can lose all the fluid and possibly blow up the transmission. Which would be extremely costly (especially if it is an automatic). If your not able to fix it right now, keep an eye on the transmission fluid and keep it at the proper level.6. Says: it will only get worse and make it so messy underneath the truck.I have changed hundreds of them in my lifetime and it is a simle job,and shouldnt run anymore than 125.00 top for parts and labor,if you lived in grapevine texas i will do it for ya. But yes you need to get this taken care of asap. Tag: Drive shaft rear transmission seal is leaking?
