What could be wrong with my car?

1. Rach Says: I have a 2000 Nissan Altima. First time it broke down, I was driving and it just came to a stop, wouldn't start. I got it towed and my mechanic put a new starter in it. He also ran a combustion test and found out that I was running on 3 cylinders and he said that at some point my car would just stop running. Then just a few weeks later, I was driving and my brights flashed on and off, my horn honked, and my car came to a stop. It's been sitting for months and months and finally I got it taken to this mechanic who works out of his house. He looked at it and told me that the problem was not my motor, that it was electrical.

So I have no idea what this means, but will it be expensive? Like more than $1000? What could the problem possibly be? And if I get that fixed, will my car run on 4 cylinders again instead of 3?
2. bandit_60 Says: runs on 3 cylinders you say ? it could be a bad plug wire or the distributor cap. that,s a compression test, not a combustion test. he was checking the compression on the cylinders. you also could have a plug not firing.by the lights flashing and horn blowing sounds like a short someplace. yes it should run on all 4s if what i said was wrong with it. sounds like you will need another alternator, starter or battery for it.
3. Horst Says: The problem is the alarm system disabled the car . The ignition or the antitheft system went wonky? You live in the UK? I only ever heard a power balance test called a cumbustion test by a British guy. The horn honking and the lights flashing tell me it anti theft related and it might be beyond the scope of a guy working out of his house. A vw shop might charge a few hundred to fix it or a couple of thousand after the guy fries something else in there.
4. mustang6172 Says: There's no such thing as a "combustion test." Are you sure it wasn't a "compression test?"

Electrical problems are usually the result of a bad ground, and harder to diagnose than fix. If it's a bad ground, it should be a cheap fix.
5. Apple Says: it sounds like to me you car is infested with ghosts and you should see and exorcist!!
