My car makes a loud noise when I start it?
(2012-01-18 15:15:11) 1. Says: My dodge neon 2000 makes a loud noise when I start it in the cold it goes away but its still something I want to fix. I can understand why I just want to know what exactly is making the noise and how to fix it. Im thinking the serpentime belt? (pardon for spelling) please help im afraid it wont start soon and I need it for work, silly -40 winter!Em2. Says: If it is a 2-30 second screeching noise, it is the serpentine belt. This does not effect how the engine starts. The engine will always start even with a bad serpentine belt. The belt runs the power steering, alternator, and possibly the water pump too. If the belt snaps, your battery could run out fast, your engine could over heat, and your power steering will be lost. But you will know when that happens and you can drive it to a mechanic to get it fixed.
It could be worn out, or it could be too loose. Cold weather seems to let you know about it. It does not screech in warm or hot weather.
Inspect the belt. Do you see dry cracks in it? If it looks like new, it could be that it needs to be tightened. Either way, it is a cheap fix $100. $20 for the new belt. $80 for 1 hour of labor.
