06 STI first performance upgrades?

1. ppooiiuuyytt Says: I am going to purchase a 06 STI and will have around 2-3K to spend in performance parts.

I am thinking of doing some air intake and cutback exhaust. I am fairly new to this upgrade stuff so take it easy on the terms.

What would be the first upgrades you would do if you wanted to get a little lower end faster 0-60 speed?
2. AnonymousGearhead Says: Well, for starters, cut about $1000 right off the top of that budget for performance parts. Why? Because that's about how much it will cost to get a Cobb Accessport and a dyno tune. Sure, these alone will make decent gains, but you'll need it if you do anything to the intake or exhaust.
Second, a cold air intake on an STi is worth about 4hp and a good one is $300. A cat back exhaust? about 6-7hp and $600-700. Your best bets? Catless up-pipe is about $130, and can gain about 10whp and about 30ft-lb. A high flow catted downpipe will be a bit more spendy, $500-ish, and will also aid in gains to the tune of 5-10 peak whp and 20+ft-lb torque at lower speeds. Plus it won't be much louder than stock with those, combined with a tune, and you could have a peak gain in the 30whp and 50-60ft-lb neighborhood, while sounding just a little louder than stock, so you won't attract police attention.
3. Ryan M Says: Best bang for buck will be a full turbo back exhaust. This includes a downpipe as well as a catback section. Those parts along with a tune will net you a very sizable power increase. What is your location, I can recommend a good tuner and shop to start with. The tune is the most important part here, you will run in to serious issues if you bolt parts on without tuning for the changes you make.
4. Racing Says: Since the STI is turbo from factory, yes intake and exhaust are great, then a pair of wild camshafts, a better intercooler and ECU tuning.

You can use a car performance simulator to virtually do this kind of mods and see how it would perform after, try at http://www.nxgtrsim.com
5. Chris Says: Do your own research and find what's best for you, and make sure you actually known what you are buying, and that you get a tune after.
