Do I need to replace my A/C compressor?

(2012-01-21 15:20:05)
1. James Says: I have a '02 Mazda Protege. The A/C has started making noise where it connects to the serpentine belt. A mechanic told me that because of this, the belt itself may ultimately break and threaten the other parts that it connects with. Diagnosis: Replace the A/C compressor. This isn't cheap, so I wanted to hopefully check w/ an expert. Will I need to replace the compressor, or can I do something more cheaply to repair the part that connects to the belt?

Thank you.
2. Michael S Says: You might be able to just get the AC clutch replaced and not the whole compressor. Especially if the AC still works and only makes noise.
I'd get a second and third opinion and I would get it from a certified AC technician and not just a mechanic.
