cookie_monster Says: I have a ford Taurus 2004 and my break light that is on the back window is about to go out and I'm guessing that may be the reason why I can't get out of park sometimes? My question is, if I change the light will I still have trouble getting out of park? Or should I just go to a mechanic and pay 80 dollars? I mean 80 dollars isn't too much but they are just light bubs. I went to the mechanic and told the guy what was wrong with my car and he said that it may also be a shortage wire that is under the break? The mechanic told me to not start the car but to move it to the first click before starting the car then put it in neutral then put it back in park then start the car and move the thing out of park into reverse or drive... I don't know how much longer I have til the light bulb goes out, right now it's to the point where I will push on the break and it will light up for a couple seconds then just go out , it doesn't stay lit. Also sometimes It will stay lit longer but only wen it wants too.

Dennis Says: The brake light switch controls the shift lock also on that car. You have a faulty brake switch or misadjusted switch, or an intermittent open or short in the brake switch.

tatto209 Says: TAKE IT TO THE MECHANIC, it sounds more than just a problem with the bulb, to me it sound like 2 different problems, just make sure you take it to a mechanic you trust and may I also recommend that he is ASE certified. Good luck !!

Henry Says: Although you should always make sure that your brake lights work, in this case it's doubtful that your problem is related to the lights. All cars with automatic transmissions have a safety lockout that prevents you from shifting out of Park unless your foot is firmly on the brake pedal. If you're having trouble shifting out of Park even though your foot is on the brake pedal, chances are good that the lockout sensor that's attached to the pedal is going bad or that there's a poor electrical connection in that area. There's only a slight chance that it could be related to the light bulbs themselves, but in this case all the bulbs would probably have to be burned out and the car would have to be designed strangely. My suggestion is to check the sensor at the pedal.
