What else should I replace along with my timing belt and water pump?
(2012-02-01 15:20:16) 1. Says: What related components should I change in my 98 Civic HX (manual)? I've heard something about a tensioner and an idler.2. Says: Whenever you replace your timing belt you should always do the timing belt tension and idler/s.. When you have the belt off, you should check your crank and camshaft seals as well as that's the best time to do them.. If they are leaking, don't put the belt back on as the oil can contaminate the belt.. Although you can normally see it without the timing belt and cover removed, you should also check your sump pan gasket/sealant and tappet/rocker cover gasket seals.. You should check your drive belts for cracks, wear or damage as a broken belt can result in on overheated engine..If you're doing the timing belt yourself make sure you;
- Set your engine to Top Dead Centre (TDC) with your crank and camshaft timing marks aligned
- Check and feel the current tension on the old timing belt
- Remove everything and place in it an order that you can return everything to it's original place (if you're not experience in engine repair)
- Mark your timing belt (with a whiteout or paint pen) on the belt and cog on the crank and cam/s gears and the direction of travel (clockwise) so you know which way the belt travels and which marking is the top and bottom..
- Remove the belt and check the belt is the correct size by laying the old and new belt on top of each other and ensuring there's no more or less teeth than the original.. While you're holding it in place, redraw all the marks from the old belt onto the new belt.. This makes for an easier installation and guarantees that you haven't misaligned the belt.. This can result in the valves hitting the pistons and causing major engine damage or failure..
- Replace your water pump, belt tensioner, idler/s and fit the new timing belt.. Set the tension correctly to prevent looseness or over tensioned.. Being too loose can cause it to jump a tooth and put your timing out and too tight can cause a whine in the engine..
- Check and double check all your timing marks are still aligned.. If they are correct, manually wind your engine over with the crankshaft bolt twice and then check your timing marks again.. The drawn on ones won't be aligned but the ones on the cog and engine should align perfectly.. The engine should wind over without any knocks or locking up..

Is the water pump bad?4. Says: Yes, replace the tensioner and idler pulley too. A good timing belt kit will have everything you need to do the job Tag: What else should I replace along with my timing belt and water pump?
