The EGR Valve returns NoX (inert gas) back into the cylinder chamber for recombustion to lower NoX emissions. NoX is created at high combustion chamber temperatures from lean air/fuel mixtures (fuel economy), the leaner it is the hotter it is. More volume of inert gas inside the chamber means less fresh air and fuel. Then saving fuel. Having a dirty or sticky egr valve can overwork your cat.
