I want to own a Camaro one day?
(2012-02-01 15:30:17) 1. Says: Right now I am in high school but my dream is to own a Camaro. I think I will get one when I have a permanent job, after I get out of college, of course. I already have a bit of money saved but not a significant amount. I want to get the LT version, so the MSRP is around 24,000. Do you think, that, realistically, I can get my Camaro once I get out of college and get a job (I am shooting for a job that pays at least 30,000 a year) or will I have to save for a bit longer?2. Says: Your car payment should not exceed more than 15% of your gross monthly income. If you buy a new Camaro it'll probably be financed over a five-year period. GM usually offers good financing rates to new college grads, so that is a pretty decent time to buy if you're in the market for a new car.You won't know whether you can buy it until you make up a budget. If you buy a $24,000 Camaro (and it'll be more than that after taxes, insurance, licensing, registration, et cetera), your monthly payment will be between $400-500 per month. A $30,000 salary will net you about 1900-2000 per month because you're going to want to buy health insurance if it's available, start a 401(k) or IRA as early as possible, and then there's payroll taxes.
On raw numbers alone, no, you can't afford a new Camaro on a $30k salary. A used one, quite possibly. Since you're in high school, make sure you use your summers for more than just lounging. Do an internship or some volunteer work in a field you might want to study in college. When you're in college, take advantage of leadership opportunities and seminars that teach you to "network" - or build connections and relationships with people. Those skills and experiences will become very important when you start sending out resumes during your senior year, looking for that first job.
Good luck!3. Says: I should hope that a college grad would get more than 30K per year (you don't need college to make that) - shoot higher and you might be able to reach your goal.
To answer your question though, it will depend greatly on your other expenses. If you go out and get your own apartment probably not. If you stay home with your folks, much better chance.4.
