What does "O/D off" mean on a car?
(2012-02-02 15:20:18) 1. Says: I'm just in my car and I see this orange light on the dash thing(like where the speedometer is) and it says "O/D off"...what does that mean? Is it any big deal or should I just not worry bout it?2. Says: It is a big deal and you'd better start worrying about it! It means the overdrive function in the transmission has been turned off. Your fuel economy will be worse above 45 mph because the RPM on the tachometer will be higher. Read your manual in the glove compartment where the overdrive button is and turn it back on. It's usually by the shifting lever somewhere.3. Says: o/d means the overdrive is off. If you are driving highway speeds, you should use o/d to maximize fuel economy. Sometimes there is a button on the shifter. It's kinda like not shifting into the highest gear in a manual car. The car will work, but the fuel economy stinks and the engine doesn't work as smoothly.4. Says: It means overdrive for the transmision. The button is usually on the shifter mechanism. Turnit back on .
The only reason to shut it off would be if you are climbing a steep hill and don't want the car
to jump in and out of a gear, or if you are driving downhill in snow. ( in simple terms )
Read up on it in your owners manual.5. Says: It means that overdrive is turned off. There should be a button near your shifter that says O/D. It will turn it back on. Tag: What does "O/D off" mean on a car?
