I purchased a vw passat allegedly?

1. Joseph Says: it was 2002 , but it looks identical to the 1999 model. although every database shows it as 2002 it is an s-reg which is definately 1999. all mechanics have explained the parts of the car that make it 1999, why would it be reg. as 2002?
2. Q Says: Manufacturers Always overproduce,I can still recall a tv news report back in the 70,s that showed a storage depot literally filled with hundreds of Fords,Ahh,I'm being kind,it was a field, some of the cars were in water up to the door mirrors, the reporter made the valid point of asking if "those" cars would be sold as new?
It was fun back then, your three year old car could be four or five years old,and this was pre computer days, buying parts for customers cars could get quite complicated,I seem to recall going through four alternators for a Ford until the right one arrived.
In a nutshell the vehicle is as old as it is,the date first registered is just that.
3. Gizzard Puke Says: Your franchised Volkswagen dealer will be able to tell you the model year of the car. The only reason I can think that a 1999 wasn't registered until 2002 is that it stood around in a pound somewhere unregistered for a long time waiting to be called off to a dealer. The other thing of course is that all might not be as it seems, has it been involved in a serious RTA - in short has it been rung. I hope for your sake it hasn't. Good Luck, Gizz.
4. Timbo is here Says: So it was old stock from when the model changed and did not get registered/first used/first sold until 2 years later.
This could be for anyone of a multitude of reasons including a car dealer going bust, a dealer just not willing to sell it cheaply enough to move it on or something similar.
As the paperwork is correct its surely nothing to be concerned about
5. George Says: Contact DVLA and ask them

It could be that the car was 1st used in 2002 or not sold until that time.

DVLA can confirm dates for you, VW can tell you from the VIN (chassis) number the car model exactly.

Did you get an HPI certificate with it ? that might show modifications if any were made.

Hope this helps
6. ivortskivor Says: look at the chassis number if the 10th digit is 2 then its prob a 2002 if the tenth digit is T its 96 or S for 95

7. Timothy L Says: Something very dodgy. It has a 1999 registration, the mechanics reckon its 1999, it looks like a 1999. Its an issue for the DVLA.
8. eelem_s Says: The dealer pulled a fast one, they did it purely so they could charge you more. Still a fantastic car so don't be too worried.
