My car requires a lot more gas than it used to. Possible reasons?
(2012-02-03 15:20:05) 1. Says: I know nothing about cars... I think i'm gonna take it in a little later but I was just curious if this is a common thing and what it could mean.2. Says: If your check engine light is on and your mileage is suffering take it to a garage asap. if its not try doing a complete tune up: New spark plugs, plug wires, and if you have a distributor new cap and rotor for it. Change the air filter, and change the oil. Check tire pressure. And try jacking it up and check if all the tires will freely spin if you give them a push with your hand, if they dont you may need a brake job. There is an outside chance your catalytic converter is getting clogged but if you aren't experiencing a severe loss of power especially accelerating then that's unlikely.3. Says: This question has been appearing a lot lately and the most likely reason is that gas prices are so
high , everyone is watching their consumption more and more.
That said, a well tuned car, correct tire pressure, and a look at what the car is rated for in mpg
along with some record keeping of miles / gallons used will give you a better idea of what you
are getting. If you drive around town vs, highway mileage, there is a considerable difference
as well.
Hope this helps..4. Says: sometimes if your running on low tires that need air this can drop your mpg by A LOT
also if you use cheap gas this will happen too.
sometimes its just the car. its not going to retain the same mpg as it did brand new5. Says: It may just need a complete tune up which is really no big deal. Tag: My car requires a lot more gas than it used to. Possible reasons?
