1. madncalebsmum Says: Bought a 1995 peugeot 106 few weeks ago, having problems with reverse gear, its only a 4 speed gears, its not always locking into gear so have to go back into neutral and start again to be able to reverse, is this a gearbox problem? if so what would be a average cost to fix, ie the parts AND labour? also how about tyres these days i know my treads starting to get low, still legal atm but low, whats an average cost of tyres nower days and fitting? please answer both parts many thanks, newbie driver x
2. Neil Lias Says: I'll be honest I'm not sure how much a replacement gearbox would be in a garage, I would usually do it myself. However I can tell you it would be a long and thus expensive job. You may get the price down slightly if you source the gearbox yourself. However, I would say you need to confirm that it isn't just the clutch playing up. If you do need a full gearbox change, the clutch will come off at the same time, so take a look at it, it's easier to replace both at the same time.

One point I would say is that all gearboxes are fitted with something called syncromesh, which basically makes it easier to get in to gear - BUT reverse doesn't have syncromesh, so it will always be harder to engage reverse.

On the subject of tyres, I'm assuming you're after quite small tyres so I would say brand new, no more than £35. Personally I would consider part worn, which you would probably get for less than £15, fitted.
3. Bazza Says: Some cars need a couple of goes to engage reverse. If you take your foot off the clutch when you return it to neutral that usually does it. Tyres for that car should be cheap as chips. You still need to be careful as some imported tyres are diabolical. Continental are very good and reasonably priced.
4. Timbo is here Says: The gearbox thing is probably perfectly normal. When you go back into neutral let the clutch out for a moment and then put it down and try again.

There are no figures available to allow anyone to calculate the average cost of tyres for yor car. Aloow at least £40 a corner but a quick call to a trye place or go online will find you an accurate price cos we will be guessing on here.
