How can I test an ignition coil?
(2012-02-04 15:20:09) 1. Says: I have an 81 Yamaha xj550 and it's not firing. I'm trying to track down the problem before I blow money on the wrong part. Neither of the two coils are firing that I know of. I've tested them by trying to spark them off the engine but got no spark. Any advice would be great and much apriciated. I'm trying to get her up an running by spring, wish me luck!!2. Says: Momentarily touch the hot side of the coil with 12 volts direct from the battery and look for the plug to spark.3. Says: check your capacitor , if it goes bad no spark at all so id go get one and try it first unless you know how to check one then put it on and see whats up if it fires your good to go if not then it could be the magneto or points4.
