Car tyres unsure of tread still legal but need advice?
(2012-02-04 15:20:12) 1. Says: Right before people start being abusive im asking this because im unsure and would like somebody to give me guidance pleaseI bought a peugeot 106 last week and did a few maintenance checks yesterday, i noticed the tyres indicators well at least i think it is level with the tread, the indicators seem to have a v shape into the tread, (there not damaged btw) which is why i am unsure, im waiting on a tyre gauge to come through the post to check but i think the tread is at 4mm, but the top of the indicators are level with the tread on front tyres, (the indicators still have the v shape to them) so what im asking is is it an emergency so to speak to replace like NOW or can they wait and if they are 4mm how long (an average is fine, i do in town, occasional motorway driving) til they need replacing, i am getting a loan from a friend to change them if its like a NOW jobby x2. Says: while you are waiting for a gauge try pressing the edge of a 5p coin into the tread. If you can see all the lettering round the edge of the coin it's below 1.6mm and illegal, though you really start to get reduced safety performance issues at 2.5mm, especially in winter.
Well done for thinking to check things, many people don't3. Says: If you have at least 1,6mm trad over the middle three quaarters of the tyre you are legal.
Indicators are normally just flat pieces between the tread blocks and as soon as they have gone flush with the trad its time to change them.
There is no average for how long they will last but if there is 4mm then should be good for 15000 on the rears and maybe 8000 front4. Says: Ryan is obviously an American lost in the UK section of Yahoo questions, one born every minute.
UK law is 1.6mm all around the tyre and over 3/4 of the width, all UK spec. tyres have wear indicators at 1.6mm, some have additional ones at 3mm as it is recommended for safety reasons to change before they get to the legal minimum5. Says: Tread Wear Indicators are actually at 2mm. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, all the way around. Which is ludicrously low. As said before, any decent tyre place will be happy to look at them and advise you.
Personally I won't have less than 3mm over the complete tread, my ar*e is more vaulable than rubber.6. Says: Legal or not makes no difference... tires and brakes are something I keep in good shape for if working correctly can save your like. So if your tires are that bad, how much is your life worth? Or how much is someone elses life worth because they blow out, slide on a wet road or you can't stop? Don't ask about legal, ask about safety, for you and everyone you meat on the road.7. Says: I would honestly pop by a couple of garage's and ask their opinion's. Try to find reputable places. I used to take my car to a reputable garage and they would tell me if things could wait to be done.8. Says: New tyres will be safer. Don't play roulette with the only things that hold you on the road just to eke out a few more miles.9. Says: Wait on it. The tires won't actually blow out until well after the steel wire shows through the tread. Even after they do blow out, it's a simple jack up the car, swap the spare on, and get a new tire. The wear bars are there as a safety regulation.. You're supposed to replace them at that point because anything afterward is "unsafe". If you're not driving on wet or icy roads consistently, then you're okay. Also, you may want to put the two best tires on the back. It would help prevent hydroplaning.
