Where does antifreeze go, if it goes in the radiator, how does it keep the engine from freezing?

1. pr Says: Your engine itself (the metal parts) cannot freeze.
It is the coolant within the engine and radiator that can freeze, and if it does it can damage the engine, the radiator, and the associated hoses and pump connecting them.

The coolant circulates through the engine's cooling jacket and the radiator, driven by the water pump, which is usually driven directly from the engine (some very modern cars have electric water pumps).

The antifreeze goes in the coolant, lowering its freezing point to as low as -40°C (depending on type and concentration), preventing the coolant from freezing under normal circumstances and so protecting the engine and the radiator. It will circulate when the engine is running. When the engine is not running it does not need to circulate. However when you first add it to the coolant you need to run the engine for a short time to properly mix the antifreeze into the coolant.

Unless you have one of the rare modern cars with an electric-driven water pump, the battery will not affect the performance of the antifreeze.
2. Neil Says: The water pump sucks the coolant out of the bottom of the radiator and pumps it up through the engine. The heated coolant flow out the top of the engine and back into the top of the radiator. The radiator fan pulls outside air through the radiator fins to remove the heat from the coolant.
3. Stpaulguy Says: additional pennyworth. battery is irrelevant to cooling circuit.
anti freeze goes into coolant in engine via radiator cap mixes with water or coolant already in cooling system. depending on mix percentage levels we will have different levels of frost / freezing protection. most cars will operate on a 50-50% mix of water and anti-freeze.
it works by stopping formation of ice crystals in water by reducing the Temperature of the coolant mixture below normal freezing point.
radiator pressure cap acts as a pressure valve to stop engine overheating in use by raising water ( under pressure) of boiling point above 100 degrees.
4. hornchurchmale Says: anti-freeze goes in the Radiator or an over-flow tank in your engine and circulates through your engine through a series of hoses it goes through the radiator to cool the fluid because anti-freeze is not used to keep an engine from freezing anti-freeze keeps your engine from overheating. for the anti freeze to circulate your car needs to be running when adding anti-freeze turn your car on and turn the heater all the way up this will let the system purge itself of air once full leave the cap off for about 10 minutes while car is running then turn off the car and put the cap back on.
5. Tommy Says: it dilutes the the existing coolant, and reduces the freezing point of that coolant. there's various grades and dilution rates which affect the degree of protection.

ferinstance its rare in the UK to go much below -10C, and very rare below -20C, so most anti freeze compounds reduce the freezing point to around -20C. normal water freezes around 0C

in more extreme latitudes you would need more protection so would use a higher concentration level and/or a different compound
6. Mark J Says: Mixed in the correct proportion with water into the engine cooling system
It lowers the freezing point to even lower than the temperatures it can drop to at night
It has absolutely nothing to do with the battery
It is circulated by the engine itself which has a pump to do so.
7. Timbo is here Says: Tommy the anti freeze DOES keep your block from freezing. The pressure cap "radiator cap" and other components along with the antifreeze are what keep it from overheating. The pressure cap increases pressure so the boiling point of the liquid is higher.

8. vettle1 Says: Because the coolent/anti freeze circulates from your radiator through a series of hoses to your engine block.
9. g Says: it goes on the windscreen and windows doesnt it? xxxx
