My neighbor has a 97 Toyota Camry?
(2012-02-04 15:20:32) 1. Says: It was her husband's car which he drove for years. He acquired a new car and kept the Toyota for a son when he starts driving. the car has been parked for several months and he passed away a couple of weeks ago and she asked me to help her move it because the battery is dead. as soon as I hooked up the jumper cables the factory theft deterrent system activated and the horn started honking and light flashing. It was late so we locked it back up and I took the owner's manual to bone up on the system. I went back today and ran the jumper cables up thru the grille so i could shut the hood back down because it is part of the system, but was never successful in getting the system shut down even tho I did everything by the book. The remote control has been broken for years but even using the key per the book, we weren't able to get it shut off. The system also includes a starter cut-out, so I am unable to get it started. Is she going to have to put a good battery in it to get around the burglar alarm system ? what am I doing wrong ?2. Says: Let's face it, even if you park the car in another spot , the car will need to be ready to go whenthe son gets his license. This theft deterrent system needs to be replaced or overhauled by
a professional. So I suggest she gets it towed to a place that specializes in this. They can also
test / charge / or replace the battery. This car will have special sentimental value for the son
and should be reliable and ready when the son is ready to drive.
So my advice is to disconnect the battery and have it towed to an auto alarm specialist or charge up that battery or replace it and see if you can figure it out.
Good Luck3. Says: The car thinks you pull;ed the battery in order to steal it, so it has locked itself up. You'll need to tow it to a dealer to have it disarmed.4. Says: When I owned a Camry we had the same problem. After replacing the battery (it was truly dead, nothing on the dash lit up and a load test showed it was drained) we had to do a series of steps to re-set the alarm. I can't remember exactly but it was along the lines of turn on the ignition, wait five seconds then press the brake pedal and a switch had to be flipped. The switch was hard to find! It was on the drivers side near where a panel met the dash. Sorry I don't have a better description and I don't own the car anymore to look. I would suggest doing a search on "97 Toyota Camry alarm re-set". Hope that helps and good luck!5. Says: I wonder if there is a way to disalarm the system.
A fuse?
My car has a mechanism that if the wrong key is used to start the vehicle, the car locks up.
Which was a pain for me - when my brother put the wrong key in the ignition.
I had to switch the entire switch.
Search around more on the internet I'd say. Sometimes you can find group or problems.
I know I used to have a car that I had to reset the moduler??? in the trunk with paper clips to reset the alarms. (thank god I worked at a car dealer , and the auto whiz there told me what to do)
Id call - maybe a dealer to see if there have ever experienced these problems, just to see what they say. They will charge an arm and leg for sure.
But, just asking around can always lead to some solution. Or if you have a car place- like Advance Auto- the guys in my town are really nice with their opinion. Tag: My neighbor has a 97 Toyota Camry?
