1. 1mind1spirt Says: I was told I might need a new alternator for my 98 mustang gt pretty soon so i started to research which ones fit my car. I saw a lot of them said "comes with no core charge" What is that? Is this something extra i need to buy before I have the shop install it?
2. rick29148 Says: They want your old alternator back, so it can be rebuilt & live again. So, you get the 'new' one, with the core charge, go home & swap it, then take you're old take-off unit back to the place you got the new one, with the paperwork, & they will refund the core charge. Now, if you're old one is cracked or smashed, you don't get the core charge back. They want a re-buildable unit in return. They then collect a big box of re-buildable cores & ship all of them to a re-manufacturer, who re-builds each one. Kinda like the circle of life ... ?
3. matt Says: Core charges come from the manufacturer of the item. They exist on items that can be rebuilt, like alternators, starters, CV axles, etc.
You pay the core charge when you buy the part, and you get the core charge reimbursed when you return your old part to the store, where it gets shipped away for rebuild.
If you're strapped for cash, you can remove your old part ahead of time, and bring it with you to the store, and you won't be charged a core.
4. Jay S Says: Don't replace parts until they go out. Alternators can last much longer than that.
Core is an additional charge you pay when you buy parts, you are then refunded that charge when you bring back your old part. The old parts are desired so they can be rebuilt.
Some parts have no core charge because the rebuilders already have lots of rebuildable cores on hand and demand for the part may have declined somewhat. When they run low, they'll put it back in.
5. kenenry Says: The "core " charge is a charge put on you to ensure you "trade in" your old unit, this is done for parts that are reconditioned and sold on a change over basis. The cost is credited back to you when you return your old part in your case the old alternator. The ones with no core charge are generally new parts and not recond
