How does a ship electricity still lights on even it is fully capsized upside down?

1. John Ace Says: In the Poseidon movie (2006), the ship is smashed by huge rogue waves and then capsize upside down, even so, when the ship is capsized, it must be a power failure if the generator is not being under surveillance of the staff when the ship is upside down. Why did this happen. A detailed answer will be given a best answer. TQ
2. Laura Kon tiki Says: Always when there's an emergency situation, you'll see some lights. In airplanes, on a cruise ship, ... Even in a building, when the electricity fails, you'll see some lights pointing at the exits. This is not with batteries in most cases (if that would be true, how big should this battery be, for e.g. the Concordia?), but with chemical lights. I don't know exactly how they work, but you can compare it with those light-bracelets you see on parties. Break the tube and the light will go on. It's a chemical reaction, no electricity needed.
3. Old Man Dirt Says: This is one of the things that should not be questioned! There are battery powered lights on ships, but they would not provide enough lighting to thrill the movie going audience. Batteries to provide that type of lighting would be big and given the time period for the move lead acid- which adds another hazard that would have been addressed. All that water would have shorted out the distribution board anyway.
You are right- that is just not the way it is or could be even today.
4. Jedi Jan Says: I agree with Paladin. There would still be reserve energy (batteries) in store even after the generators failed. Look at the incidence of "black boxes" from downed aircraft still sending out signals for quite some time, far beyond their loss of connected power source. Not a detailed answer but I feel we are on the right track.
5. R T Says: Large ships usually have backup battery systems.
6. Thomas Says: Emergency Lighting System

serviced by a generator
7. Kyle Says: some large shipes have issolated backup power systems wich makes it hard for water to short them.
8. Paladin Says: batteries
9. Salim Says: its a movie not real life
