In todays day and age, does it make sense to buy a V8?
(2012-02-04 15:30:07) 1. Says: Well, I just sold my 2001 F150 XLT Sport, step-side.. god I loved that truck. It had a 4.2L v6, and I averaged about 15 MPG.I'm currently looking at a 1990 F150 XLT, and it's fully loaded. The only difference is it has a 5.0 V8, and dual tanks.
This truck would be a daily driver, of about 10+ miles or so.. so I'm just curious as gas prices are rising, would it be a senseless choice to purchase it?2. Says: According to Fueleconomy.gov, a 1990 F150 V-8 should get around 13 mpg on average (low end) which is a couple mpg below your previous average. If you drive 15,000 miles per year, the difference is negligible in fuel costs...(2 mpg difference over 15K miles and 3.50/gallon is an extra 540.00 per year or 10.00 per week...and much less at 10 miles per day/3650 miles per year driving)... although you could do better by getting a newer model with slightly better average mpg. You would have to weigh how much more a newer model like a 2010 would cost and see how much fuel you would save by getting better mpg and then see how long it would take to recoup the higher price by better fuel economy. Probably not worth it and any fullsize truck is going to get around the same fuel economy or close to it unless you go hybrid.

An Answer ran the #s and found the v8-v6 diff to be not significant; and you'd only drive 10 miles /day?!
You'r built like a cop and they seem comfortable lolling around in their Crown Vics.4. Says: if you buy something else you will be spending all your time thinking
i could have had a V8 Tag: In todays day and age, does it make sense to buy a V8?
