What's the cost of converting a '67 Mustang from an automatic transmission into a manual?
(2012-02-05 15:15:06) 1. Says: I have a standard 289 1967 Mustang. I've always wanted to turn it into a manual but I'm not looking to simply drop it off at a mechanic and let them have fun on my tab. I've done some work on the car but nothing this major and I have about 3 months of free time to complete it, and a friend that went to mechanic school that can help me out. Anyone have a few tips on what I'm getting into or the price?Thank you.2. Says: Your old iron as compared to modern cars are not as restrictive when it comes to such things, as Ford in this case would have built all chassis the same and the transmission option would not have mattered, meaning the clutch peddle mounts would be there but not used with an automatic application, on newer cars there not which makes such conversions too expensive if not impossible, your problem will be finding the linkage and hardware for a reasonable price, other than that you just need the flywheel, clutch assembly, trans and bell housing, trans cross member and different drive line in most cases, provided there OEM or quality aftermarket parts everything will bolt right up so no custom fabrication should be needed, and if yours is a column shift there also may be a removable cover on the transmission well to accecpt the stick, if not you may have to cut a hole,3. Says: How many gears do you want ?? There are four, five & six speed manuals that will fit. A nice heavy duty T-5 five speed is like 1200 brand new from Ford, & it will hold 300 hp easy. On the top is a T-56 six speed for like $ 2500 that will hold 800 hp. Probably the hardest part of the conversion is going to be getting the clutch pedal up inside the dash, because there's not much elbow room to work. There are a couple of companies that have entire catalogs of just parts to restore your '67, so that's a great place to start.4. Says: C4 transmission and install will cost about $1200 with parts
A performance transmission will cost about $300 more
this is a rough estimate as I do not know what your local labor rate is. You will need a transmission cooler installed or you will need to purchase a radiator with one... Go with the external one, it'll save you money but make sure they use quality transmission cooler line and not fuel line Tag: What's the cost of converting a '67 Mustang from an automatic transmission into a manual?
