Up motion of a camshaft lobe and a down motion to open a valve.

Even notice a DOHC motor usually don't have rocker arms because it does not need to convert that motion.

3. Scott Says: They convert rotational motion (the camshaft) to linear motion (the valves). Each time the camshaft makes a rotation, the valve opens and closes once.
