Why is there a battery light in my car?

Says: On my dashboard there is a red battery that is lit up, it says LOW underneath it, I think it means my battery is dieing, but my car runs on gasoline... why is there a picture of a battery on my dashboard? And how did it get there, because there wasn't a picture of a battery the other day? Now there is a picture of a battery and I do not know what to do.2. Says: It probably means that your alternator is not charging properly, or that the battery is so worn out that it won't charge up anymore.The battery in your car supplies the power to start it when you first turn the key. The alternator's job is to keep the electrical system working & to keep the battery charged. If the alternator is going bad, it will also hurt the battery.
Take your car to an auto parts store, many of them will do a free alternator & battery test.
Cost of a new alternator - $150 ish.
Cost of new battery - $75 - $100 ish.
