Thoughts on the Volkswagen Eos?
(2010-05-26 22:10:58) 1. Says: I just saw one on the way to work and I think I'm in love! Do you own one, or have you ever driven one? What did you think of it?2. Says: I drove an Eos . For a day.Took my trusty VW GTI to dealership for oil/filter change, etc. and they just happened to have an Eos for a loaner. Service manager asked if I'd like to take it for a spin. ' Twas 82 degrees, partly cloudy; could I refuse this offer?
This car was a blast! Called my wife at work; picked her up for lunch. She summed driving the Eos up in one sentence; sun feels good on my face, wind feels wonderful in my hair....
This car is of course a convertible. But much more than that. Its not a 'rag top' ; it has a steel roof. And if you don't want the complete top down, you can just open the sun roof. Or not. Either way, blue skies are visible... Powerful too, with a 200 HP turbo engine.
Three minutes to closing, I reluctantly returned this awesome auto.
Both of us were stunned by the Eos. Now all we have to do is figure out how to juggle our finances so we can get one.....3. Says: I love VW's, but personally, I think that car is way, WAY overpriced. Rag-tops are nice, but it's a 1-trick pony.
For roughly 1K more, you are into a base C-300 Mercedes(which is a much more advanced German vehicle, safer, will run circles around the VW, and a much better drive and resale value, luggage space, etc. Insurance will probably be less based on the fact Mercedes is also the benchmark in safety innovation(which reduces injury claims, etc)
At the end of 5-years, the C-Class will command a resale of 18-23K. The VW will be 12-15...maybe.
The VW also is nondescript, and just does not exude enough panache to command such an excessive price(they need to recoup cost from such a limited run). I would bet in 4-5 years, that model won't even exist in VW's line-up. Cute, maybe, but the Benz has presence that VW can't even come close to, inside and out, nevermind when you crack the whip getting on a on-ramp.
