1. samii Says: ecu repair
2. cmdauto.pl Says: The ECUs are repairable and this is what i am doing on the daily basis. The cost depends on the type of failure. Common faults like blown output stages (no power to injectors etc) are quite easy
and cheap to fix - say around $100 per case. More complicated issues, like damaged EEPROM (a non-volatile memory that holds variant coding and other settings for the unit) or faulty program in the ECU are more expensive to fix, around $200-$400 depending on the type of ECU.

Since there is an antitheft (immobilizer) device that resides in the ECU, swapping out the computer for used one is normally not possible unless you reprogram the ECU to be "married" with the new car. This is also doable and costs around $200 here.

Most of the ecu series (older gasoline ecus like HFM, ME2.0, ME2.8...; common rail diesel ecus for CDIs - CR1.x, CR2.x, CR3.x...) are repairable.
3. happy2b_white Says: Depends on the year and model. You can't really repair them, they have to be replaced. A new one costs at least $400 and could be as high as $2,000, and it might need to be programmed after it's installed.
4. viggom35 Says: Varies. Used, from a wrecking yard, or from another known working car can save you hundreds over new. Some older models, you can re-solder weak points on the circuit board to fix. It's a gamble, but if you're going to replace anyhow it's worth a shot.
5. Bandit-05 Says: They are not repairable. They can only be replaced.

Cost depends on which year and model you're referring to.
