Whats the difference between jeeps?

1. kate10 Says: My dad and I were talking and he said a jeep wrangler would be a good vehicle for me but it would be a 5-speed and hard top. Whats the difference between a hard and soft top jeep? I know that a hard top is warmer in the summer and stuff but is one safer than the other or is there a significant difference? Also, whats a good price for a decent new or used jeep?
2. Desert Dust Says: The soft top is like a convertible top. You can fold it down and go topless when the weather is nice, which I really enjoy. But the soft top can be quite noisy at highway speeds. The hard top can be taken off, but it needs to be unbolted and it takes at least two people to remove it. Then there is the issue of storing it. I doubt there is much difference between the hard top and soft top as far as summer heat goes. I had a dark soft top for a few years and it was pretty hot is the summer. And it was pretty cool in the winter. I don't know where you live but in a colder climate the hard top might be nice in the winter. As for safety it pretty much a wash. As pointed out in a roll over the hard top is likely to broken or come off. No need to mention the soft top. But there are the roll bars to give some protection. Prices are all over the place. Check autotrader.com for the prices in your area. Hope this helps, enjoy your O|||||||O !!!!!!!!
3. Crys Says: Honestly I don't find one top safer over the other. The soft top may be made of cloth, but the hard top is made of fiberglass. So in a rollover the top is just gonna break on impact. The hard top is a lot harder to take off. So you won't be able to take it off by yourself. Maybe that is what your dads intent is as far as the hard top. I do know the purchase price on jeeps with the hard top is a little higher because the top is more expensive. As far as price you will just have to shop around it depends on your area when it comes to average price, but kbb.com will give you a good average price.
4. beartree Says: A Jeep with a hard top has less road noise than a soft top. Plus a hard top Jeep has full metal doors with glass windows that roll up and down which is a plus. A few soft top Jeeps do have full metal doors though, but most have half doors . I think that 2003 & newer Jeeps hard tops are made of a composite material rather than the old fiber glass tops. Both tops are as safe as the other since they both have the same roll cage in them which is what protects you the most.
As for prices, go to carmax.com and see what they have to offer. Give you some ideas on the market on Jeeps.
5. Logan Says: I have an 06 with a hard top currently on it. It got hit by a garbage truck last week and the hard top was smashed open into tiny pieces so I don't really think it is that much safer than the soft top. The only benefit I can think of, speaking from experience, is that with a soft top all someone needs to do is unzip or slice your window and they can steal anything in your car. The hard top makes it harder to break in.
6. Perry J Says: Sticker on the hard top says "the doors & top of this vehicle are for protection from the elements only"
That means the hard top is in no way safer than the soft top. The best thing about the hard tops are that they're harder to break in. They're a pain to take off & unless you have a hoist, they take up a lot of garage space. I sold my hardtop for $1,000 & got a new Bestop sailcloth top. It's more quiet than the hard top was.
