Do I have 4WD or AWD in my Subaru?
(2010-05-29 16:47:35) 1. Says: I drive a 1994 Subaru Impreza L.It's in great condition even though I bought it used almost 3 months ago.My cousin is under the impression (since she a 2000 Subaru Legacy),that all Subaru's have either 4WD or AWD.I know the 94 Impreza L has optional AWD,and since my car has almost all of the options that were available on it,I assume it was AWD,but I'm not sure, and I have no idea how to find out.Any ideas?2. Says: Actually, most Subarus are both, but the terms are generally used differently depending on the application.
4WD or four-wheel drive is generally a vehicle that normally runs with only two wheels driven, and the driver controls the operation of the transfer case, to manually shift into and out of 4-wheel drive. Most 4WD vehicles may also select between high and low range gears while in 4-wheel operation.
AWD or All-wheel drive usually indicates that the vehicle has all four wheels driven at all times, or that the transfer case automatically shifts into and out of 4-wheel drive and the driver has no direct control over the system.
I believe that most Subarus sold in the USA since the mid 1990's have been AWD. A quick way to tell if yours is AWD is to take a look under the rear of the car. If you can see a drive shaft coming back to the rear axle, and a rear differential, then you have AWD. If not, then it's just Front-wheel drive.3. Says: i think several of them came out with 4 wheel drive but it should tell in your service manuel.4. Says: Well it should say awd on a badge or if you want you can get down on the ground and physically look for a rear differential and axles going to the rear wheels I know subaru have ft wheel drive cars with longitudinal engine and transmission so is standard for them to have ft wheel traction. In conclusion look for axles in the front and rear of the car.
4wd should have a selection lever to engage it and is self explanatory Awd is engage all the time so there is no need to engage however the vehicles with awd will have a badge identifying it on the outside of the car and on some on the instrument cluster to let the driver know since awd will handle/drive different than a normal car. Hope it helps5. Says: It is AWD. It is an all the time all wheel drive. Tag: Do I have 4WD or AWD in my Subaru?
