What about my Honda Accord?

1. rayzinside Says: Does it matter what oil and filter I use for my 1997 Honda Accord. I noticed that one place put 5w30 in and the next time I had Honda change the oil and they put 5w20 in. The book calls for 5w30. I live in the south, I don't know if this make any difference. Must I use a Honda filter? I am going to change the oil and filter myself so I just want to be sure. (Acutally it is my son's car.)
2. galaxiexl Says: I run whats on the Oil Filler Cap and in the owners Manual.5 W 30.After running Castrol GTX for the longest,I finally switched to Mobil One Synthetic and always use a Fram filter. You can change Oil 10 times a Year or three or Four times a year.I run it 10,000 miles(at least)before draining out $30.00 worth of Oil.Synthetic was invented by the Germans during WWII as the Allies had totally destroyed all the refineries.Along came NASA and Mobil Oil and we have the modern lubricant known as Mobil One.Conventional Oil turns into a solid in outer space,NASA had to have something to lube moving parts at absolute zero.Good enough for NASA,Good enough for my little Hondacar.
3. ticanito Says: Some oil change places put whatever oil they have at that time into the car. Hard to say if this will cause damage or not. To be on the safe side, stick with Honda's recommendations. You do not need to buy the filter from Honda,go to your local auto parts store. Most people do not like FRAM filters, so you might want to stay away from those.
4. J Says: 5w30 and a good quality filter, not a cheepo from the big-box stores. I generally use FRAM or PUROLATOR filters you can get them at the big stores, but I stay away from "Their " brand.
Dont go to the dealer, if you are out to save $
5. Peter L Says: I would stick with the 5w30 since that's what they originally had in mind. As far as oil filters, you can use whatever brand you want as long it was made for the car.

I have a 1999 Accord that I maintain myself.
